Goal: Engage parents and the community in student learning; Empower parents with the tools they need to support their children’s learning.
Key Outcome: Parents actively support their children’s education.
Recent Success: In the fall of the 2011-2011 school year, 53% of family program participants were reading with their children 1-3 times/week and 44% were reading every day; in the spring 86% reported they were reading every day, a more than 42% increase.
Through Powerful Schools’ Family/Community Engagement program, we organize Family Literacy Nights and the Motheread/Fatheread series (for limited English proficiency families).
These activities are aimed at increasing the level of at-home reading by children with their families and reinforcing to parents the importance of family engagement, regardless of their ability to speak English. Through literacy nights, student showcases, and other school based activities, we also provide opportunities for parents/guardians to be actively involved in their child’s education.
