Goal: Engage students through expanded learning opportunities that focus on strengthening student esteem, empowerment and expression.
Key Outcome: Students are motivated and engaged.
Recent Success: In recognition of the effectiveness of our Out-of-Class Learning program, our afterschool program at John Muir Elementary was ONE of only FOUR programs selected by the Department of Education to be featured nationally on the “Doing What Works” Clearinghouse website (http://dww.ed.gov/) for research-based education practices online. Some of Powerful Schools’ program materials; including evaluation, surveys, design and curriculum. are featured on the website for use by other organizations.
During the 2011-2012 school year, 100% of parents reported that their children learned new things when the attended Powerful Schools’ afterschool programs, while 80% of parents reported that their children gained confidence in themselves after attending Powerful Schools’ afterschool programs.
Through Powerful Schools’ Out-of-Class Program, we work to align each after school and summer class to individual school goals, which extend the learning day and develop skills, self-esteem and confidence of participating children. Last year we offered over 250 different classes, serving more than 1,600 students across the school year and summer.
We envision schools as vibrant community schools, rather than closing at 3 p.m. and going dark.
Our after-school classes are high quality and aligned to each school’s goals. The classes are offered on-site at the school and helps keep kids off the streets. We offer enrichment classes like circus skills, photography, chess, computer blogging, gymnastics and choir. In addition, we offer classes that are more academic in nature, such as Homework Center, Wacky Science, I’m Going to College, and Explorations in Math. Our goal is to help children to stay engaged in learning, be motivated to succeed in school, and have the confidence to achieve. In addition, we offer summer classes that are aimed at reducing “summer loss” that many students experience during the summer months. The summer classes also provide students with the opportunity to learn new and exciting things.
Classes are held in the afternoon directly following school at the schools listed below. Classes are open to all students grades K-5, regardless of which school the student attends.
